I’m giving away several books throughout March in honor of Women’s History Month. Win a copy of this book, courtesy of yours truly!
Coming of Age in Mississippi is about Anne Moody’s experiences growing up in the Jim Crow south. As she grows older and gets more life experience, she becomes increasingly aware of the oppression and racism that affected–and threatened–her life. She was coming of age just before the civil rights era exploded, and by the time she was in college she was determined to fight the oppression. She recounts her experiences as an activist fighting both the racism she experienced as a Black woman living in the United States, as well as the sexism she encountered within the civil rights movement. Though Moody is still alive, she refuses to speak about the book or grant interviews–but this one book speaks volumes.
I was never assigned this book in undergrad, but I was required to read it for my Women’s Movements class in grad school. I immediately fell in love with it–it’s engrossing, and it’s one of the books about American history that everyone should read…which is why I’m giving away one copy!
And the best thing is…this giveaway is open to readers worldwide! Want a chance to read this book? Fill out this form by Saturday, April 2, 2011.
Good luck! 🙂
